🫂 Dad skin-to-skin and your role as an equal parent
Skin-to-skin is one way to get to know your baby through warmth, touch and your familiar voice. You are a parent in your own right—not a substitute or a supporting act. Safe, everyday care matters more than any special bonding technique.
Before you start
- Choose a time when you are fully awake and not affected by alcohol, sedating medicines or exhaustion.
- Ask the maternity team to demonstrate positioning, especially after a difficult birth or if baby is premature or unwell.
- Baby can wear a diaper against your bare chest. Keep the face uncovered and avoid overheating.
- Skin-to-skin may support comfort and bonding, but it does not guarantee that crying will stop.
Try safe, comfortable skin-to-skin
1. Check that it is a good time
In hospital, coordinate with the maternity team and your partner's wishes, including after a caesarean birth. At home, choose an alert period rather than a moment when you are fighting sleep.
2. Position baby carefully
Sit supported with baby upright against your chest. Support their head and body, turn the head to one side and keep the neck neutral, not curled chin-to-chest. The nose and mouth must remain clear and visible.
3. Watch, listen and adjust
Keep checking breathing, colour and comfort. Talk softly or simply stay still. Follow baby's cues; stop and reposition if they slip down or appear uncomfortable.
4. Share care beyond cuddles
Agree who handles feeds, diapers, appointments and rest breaks. Ask which language, songs or family practices your household prefers rather than assuming one tradition fits everyone.
5. Move baby before you get sleepy
Never doze with baby on your chest, especially on a sofa or armchair. For sleep, place baby on their back in their own firm, flat, clear sleep space, in your room for at least six months, without pillows, blankets or toys.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Treating skin-to-skin as a test of bonding If it is uncomfortable or not possible, clothed cuddles, talking and responsive care still build connection.
- ❌ Assuming warmth replaces monitoring Your chest does not remove the need to watch baby's airway and temperature. For breathing difficulty, blue colour or floppiness, call 911 urgently.
