😭 Getting through evening crying spells
Many young babies have unsettled periods, often in the evening, but the timing and cause vary. Crying can reflect hunger, discomfort, tiredness or illness. You do not need to identify a special cry sound: sounds are hard to distinguish and are not a validated diagnostic system.
What may help
- A quiet, comfortably lit space.
- A correctly fitted carrier suitable for baby's age and size, if used.
- Baby's own safe sleep space and a thermometer.
- Contact details for your pediatric team and a trusted support person.
Check, comfort and share the load
1. Check baby first
Look at breathing, colour and alertness. Under 3 months, a temperature of 38°C or higher needs urgent medical assessment. Call 911 for breathing difficulty, blue colour or floppiness; keep a local transport backup.
2. Check everyday needs
Check the diaper, clothing and room warmth. Offer breast milk or formula when hunger cues appear, even if a feed was recent. Do not force a top-up or use a clock to rule out hunger.
3. Offer gentle comfort
Try a supported upright cuddle, gentle rocking or a brief burping attempt. Reduce light and noise, and try one change at a time rather than continually switching techniques.
4. Try awake skin-to-skin
Hold baby against your bare chest only while you are fully awake. Keep the face visible, nose and mouth uncovered and neck comfortably positioned. If you feel sleepy, put baby in their own sleep space.
5. Walk safely if helpful
In a carrier, keep baby upright, snug and high enough to kiss, with the face visible and chin off the chest. Monitor breathing and heat. If using background sound, keep it quiet and away from baby's head.
6. Take a safe break
If overwhelmed, place baby on their back in a firm, flat, clear crib and step away briefly to regain calm. Ask your partner or another willing adult to take over. Seek medical advice for persistent unusual crying, poor feeding or fewer wet diapers.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Shaking baby Never shake a baby. If shaking may have happened, seek emergency medical help immediately, even if baby seems well.
- ❌ Assuming every evening cry is normal New, severe or inconsolable crying deserves assessment, especially with vomiting, fever, unusual sleepiness or feeding changes.
- ❌ Feeling you must manage alone Accept help from trusted people if you want it. Agree on safe soothing practices and preferred language rather than assuming family routines.
