🤗 Holding your baby won't make them spoiled

Comforting a baby is not spoiling them. Warm, responsive care helps them feel secure while they gradually learn to manage feelings. You do not have to respond perfectly or stop every cry to build a loving relationship.

What responsive care means

  • Crying communicates needs or distress, but the cause is not always obvious.
  • Babies need help regulating feelings; a familiar voice, gentle touch or cuddle may help.
  • Toddlers can express frustration and test boundaries while still needing calm support.
  • Dads build their own relationships through everyday care, not by acting as backup parents.

Build the bond through everyday care

  1. 1. Notice and respond

Check feeding, diapers, comfort and signs of illness. Try your voice, eye contact or a cuddle. Cry sounds alone cannot reliably diagnose what is wrong.

  2. 2. Use familiar routines

A gentle song, predictable bedtime routine or quiet cuddle can help. Adjust to your baby's cues rather than expecting one technique to work every time.

  3. 3. Own regular care

Take responsibility for diapers, bathing, settling or feeding where possible. If you work overseas, agree on practical ways to share planning and maintain familiar contact without blaming yourself for the distance.

  4. 4. Take a safe break when overwhelmed

Place baby on their back in their own firm, flat, clear sleep space and step away briefly to regain calm. Ask a trusted adult for support. Never shake a baby.

  5. 5. Keep cuddles safe

Stay awake when holding baby or doing skin-to-skin, with the airway visible. Before you doze, move baby to their own sleep space in your room for at least the first six months.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Treating crying as a contest You do not need to prove who is in charge. Comfort young babies; with toddlers, combine reassurance with calm, age-appropriate boundaries.
  • ❌ Thinking a slow bond means failure Closeness may grow gradually. Keep showing up and speak with your health team if anxiety, low mood or feeling disconnected is making care difficult.
