🤱 Breastfeeding and family life

Support informed feeding choices without pressure or guilt: breastfeeding, combination feeding or formula. Offer water, snacks, practical help and rest. Persistent pain or concerns about milk intake deserve professional help.

Useful support

  • A tall glass of water and a healthy snack every single time she nurses: breastfeeding triggers an intense, sudden thirst.
  • The nursing pillow properly propped up and soft, dim lighting.
  • Lanolin cream or soothing hydrogel pads on standby for cracked nipples or engorgement. Offer encouragement, not pressure to endure pain. Persistent nipple pain, wounds or poor intake need assessment by a midwife, feeding specialist or clinician; creams do not replace this.

Share the care

  1. 1. Before the feed

Change the diaper to gently wake baby up, then hand them over to mom ready to latch.

  2. 2. After the feed

After feeding, offer burping and gentle rocking. Skin-to-skin is only for an awake, alert adult with baby’s face visible and airway clear. If you feel sleepy, put baby on their back in their own clear, flat sleep space.

  3. 3. Be the shield

Filter unhelpful remarks, but take concerns about poor feeding, wet diapers or weight seriously and seek professional advice promptly.

  4. 4. When to ask for help

Offer encouragement, not pressure to endure pain. Persistent nipple pain, wounds or poor intake need assessment by a midwife, feeding specialist or clinician; creams do not replace this.

  5. 5. Build your own bond

Feeding isn't the only way to connect. Bath time, babywearing, gentle massages, skin-to-skin, and silly chats: that's your playground.

  6. 6. Real talk

Share changing, meals, nights and appointments as equal parents. Agree a plan together and respect informed feeding choices without pressure or blame.

  7. 7. Notice early feeding cues

Rooting, hand-to-mouth movements and restlessness may mean baby is ready to feed. Do not delay a hungry baby for a routine diaper change. If baby is unusually sleepy or hard to wake for feeds, seek clinical advice.

  8. 8. Support intake checks without pressure

Frequent feeding does not by itself prove low supply. Track wet diapers and attend growth checks; ask for help with poor intake, persistent sleepiness or growth concerns. Agree on a plan with your partner and clinician rather than pushing breastfeeding or formula.

  9. 9. Build your own relationship with baby

Talk, sing, bathe and comfort baby, and offer awake supervised tummy time. Bonding is not limited to feeding. Share night responsibilities where possible, and keep baby's crib in your room for at least six months without bedsharing or sofa sleep.

Questions dads ask

What if we use formula or mixed feeding?

You still deserve practical, non-judgmental support. Powdered formula is not sterile: use safe water at least 70°C when mixing, follow the product's exact water-to-powder ratio and cool before feeding. Hold baby for feeds, never microwave or prop bottles, and discard leftovers. Follow hunger cues, growth and clinical advice rather than a universal volume target.
