❓ What happens after a trip to maternity triage?

A maternity assessment helps the team decide what care is needed; arrival does not necessarily mean admission or immediate birth. In the Philippines, the assessment area may be the ER, labour ward or another designated unit—ask your hospital where to go.

Checks the team may offer

  • Questions about symptoms, pregnancy history and baby's movements, plus maternal vital signs.
  • Assessment of baby's heartbeat and contractions appropriate to the situation.
  • Examination for fluid leakage or cervical change, with explanation and consent.
  • Ultrasound, urine or blood tests when indicated.

Assessment and possible next steps

  1. 1. Share information and preferences

Help provide records and symptom timings if your partner wants you to. Ask about her preferred language, privacy and support needs; staff should explain examinations and seek consent.

  2. 2. Going home with a plan

If the assessment is reassuring and hospital care is not needed, the team may recommend waiting at home. Ask what to expect, when to return and which number to call.

  3. 3. Staying for observation

Symptoms or risk factors may mean further monitoring or tests. Ask why observation is recommended and when the plan will be reviewed rather than assuming a fixed stay.

  4. 4. Admission or transfer

The team may recommend labour care, induction, an operation or transfer to a better-equipped facility. Ask about the reason, options and urgency, while respecting your partner's decisions.

  5. 5. Confirm the safety net

Before leaving, repeat back the instructions. New bleeding, reduced movements, fluid leakage or worsening pain requires renewed contact. Call 911 for severe emergencies such as collapse, seizure or heavy bleeding.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Treating discharge as a wasted trip Getting concerning symptoms checked is reasonable. A reassuring assessment does not mean you should ignore new or changing symptoms later.
  • ❌ Assuming you can remain throughout Companion access depends on your partner's wishes, clinical needs and facility policy. Ask in advance and arrange another way to stay in contact if needed.
