🧼 Baby care: fewer products, a simpler routine
A few suitable products can be enough for baby care. Natural, organic and homemade do not automatically mean safe. Either parent can manage the routine and ask a pharmacist or local health centre in Kenya for advice.
What you need
- Safe lukewarm water and clean soft cloths.
- A mild, fragrance-free baby cleanser if needed.
- Cleaning products in original containers, locked away.
Where to start
1. Clean gently at changes
Remove stool gently with water and a soft cloth, using a mild cleanser if needed. Pat dry, including skin folds. During water disruptions, follow local water-safety advice rather than assuming stored water is suitable.
2. Keep baths simple
Use comfortably lukewarm water and stay within arm's reach throughout. Prepare everything first; never leave baby alone to fetch supplies. Avoid essential oils, fragrances and homemade mixtures on baby skin unless clinically advised.
3. Watch for irritation
In humid weather, change damp clothing and keep folds gently clean and dry. Seek advice for persistent or spreading redness, broken skin or signs of infection. Do not replace prescribed treatment with herbal remedies.
4. Use containers safely
Use food containers only for their stated purpose and replace damaged items. Never microwave milk: it can heat unevenly and burn baby's mouth. Keep hot liquids and cleaning supplies out of reach.
5. Manage indoor air
Avoid cigarette smoke, vaping and room fragrances around baby. Ventilate when outdoor air quality allows; during smoke, dust or pollution episodes, follow available Kenyan public-health and county advisories. Keep baby away from cooking smoke. Never mix cleaning products, including bleach with vinegar or ammonia.
6. Buy for suitability
Compare ingredients, intended use and price at shops or pharmacies. An organic label does not rule out irritation, and a longer product list is not necessarily better care.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Assuming traditional means harmless Family practices vary. Ask a clinician before using herbal or fragranced preparations on baby skin.
- ❌ Stopping prescribed care Speak to the prescriber before changing treatment.
Questions dads ask
Are organic products gentler?
Not necessarily. Natural ingredients can also irritate or cause allergies. Choose baby-suitable products and seek advice if a reaction develops.
When does a rash need urgent help?
A baby under three months with a temperature of 38°C or above needs urgent medical assessment. For breathing difficulty, blue colour or floppiness, call 999 or 112 in Kenya. Emergency response is not guaranteed: have backup transport to the nearest emergency facility and do not delay urgent care while waiting.
