📵 Screens and baby: more connection, fewer interruptions
Phones help with work, family messages and baby photos. They can also interrupt shared time. Agree on realistic habits across parents and other caregivers, protect sleep and keep useful devices working longer.
What you need
- A place to park phones during shared time.
- Simple habits agreed by caregivers.
- Time for backups, security updates and repairs.
Where to start
1. Start with adult habits
Silence unnecessary notifications during meals, play and bedtime. If a work call or family message needs attention, handle it and reconnect rather than aiming for impossible phone-free perfection.
2. Prioritise real interaction
For babies, choose talking, songs, floor play and books rather than routine sedentary screen viewing. Ask your local child-health clinic in Kenya for current age-appropriate advice. Keep prescribed communication or care tools.
3. Make older children's viewing deliberate
Choose suitable content, watch together when possible and set predictable stopping points. Keep screens from displacing sleep, active play and relationships. Help grandparents and other caregivers use the same practical boundaries.
4. Use calls for connection
During video calls with relatives, stay alongside baby and respond together. End the call when baby looks away or becomes unsettled; a screen need not hold their attention to make the call worthwhile.
5. Maintain before replacing
Consider repair or battery replacement through a qualified service. Keep security updates current. Before passing a device on, back up memories and erase personal data. For unusable equipment, check with Kenya's National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) for appropriately licensed e-waste handlers and confirm their collection arrangements.
6. Keep memories manageable
Save favourite photos and remove unwanted duplicates if helpful. A printed album can be lovely, but is not automatically greener than digital storage. You can also enjoy a moment without photographing it.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Rules only for children Adults should join screen-free moments too, with agreed exceptions for work, access needs and urgent contact.
- ❌ Claiming precise carbon savings Maintaining devices is useful without attaching unverified emissions figures.
Questions dads ask
Which advice should we follow?
Ask your child's local child-health clinic team in Kenya or clinician for current age-appropriate guidance, including any developmental, communication or care needs.
Is a paper album always greener?
No. Materials, printing, storage and use all matter. Choose what suits your family without assuming either format is automatically better.
