♻️ Second-hand baby gear: buy less, check carefully
Second-hand clothes and equipment can help your budget. Check the actual item, its history and its instructions—not just the listing or a seller's promise. Share the research and inspections between caregivers.
What you need
- A short list of sleep, feeding, clothing and transport needs.
- Model numbers and manufacturer instructions.
- Manufacturer recall information and applicable product-standard guidance from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
Where to start
1. Prepare essentials first
Arrange a safe sleep space, basic clothing and feeding supplies before birth, plus a suitable child restraint for car journeys. Borrow or buy extras later as your needs become clearer.
2. Inspect before paying
Check missing parts, sharp edges, loose fastenings, mould and recalls. Test moving parts and harnesses. Wash clothing before use; a resale platform or rental label is not a safety guarantee.
3. Verify a car seat's history
Choose only a seat with a reliable history, within its manufacturer's usable lifespan, with all parts and instructions. Check crash-replacement guidance, child fit and vehicle compatibility. Ask Kenya's National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) about current road-safety requirements, and seek qualified child-restraint fitting advice if unsure.
4. Check the sleep setup
Use an intact cot or bassinet with a firm, flat mattress that fits exactly. Replace a sagging, damaged or uncertain mattress. Put baby on their back in their own separate, clear sleep space, in your room for at least six months, without pillows, blankets, toys or bumpers. Keep baby's head uncovered and do not use hats indoors.
5. Check rentals just as carefully
Inspect the item supplied, cleaning arrangements, recall status and instructions. Compare delivery, deposits and the full rental cost with buying. Ask the manufacturer about uncertain equipment and KEBS about applicable Kenyan product standards, including for imported items.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Accepting an unknown car-seat history A bargain does not resolve uncertainty about crash damage, missing parts or expiry.
- ❌ Assuming new means suitable New equipment still needs to fit your child, meet applicable requirements and be used correctly.
Questions dads ask
Can I use a second-hand car seat?
Only if its history, condition, parts, lifespan and suitability are reliable. If you cannot verify these, choose another seat.
Must the mattress be new?
Not necessarily, but it must be firm, flat, clean, undamaged and an exact fit. Replace it if those checks are uncertain. A new mattress does not replace safe-sleep practices.
