🧘♂️ Labor and delivery: logistics, hygiene, and privacy in the delivery room
Support-person access and infection precautions are set by each maternity service.
What you need to know
1. What to prepare
Confirm visiting and birth-partner rules, consent for photographs and what supplies the unit provides.
2. What to check
Wash hands and follow staff directions; protect the patient’s privacy. A chosen supporter is not automatically a legal decision-maker.
3. In South Africa
Confirm your clinic or midwife obstetric unit, referral hospital, transport plan and after-hours contacts. Bring pregnancy records and your baby’s Road to Health booklet to visits; private medical-scheme arrangements and public referral pathways differ.

When in doubt, contact your doctor or midwife. For a life-threatening emergency, call 112 from a mobile phone; 10177 for an ambulance.
