⏳ Understanding labour stages and cervical dilation
Labour progress varies; cervical dilation is only one part of assessment.
3 Game-Changers to Help the Cervix Open
1. What to prepare
Follow the maternity team’s plan for when to attend, especially with waters breaking, bleeding or changed movements.
2. What to check
Support the birthing parent with consent, comfort and communication. Do not use a fixed centimetres-per-hour rule to judge whether labour is normal.
3. In South Africa
Confirm your clinic or midwife obstetric unit, referral hospital, transport plan and after-hours contacts. Bring pregnancy records and your baby’s Road to Health booklet to visits; private medical-scheme arrangements and public referral pathways differ.
