🚶 Getting around with baby: practical options, no pressure

Walking or public transport may suit some trips, but shade, paths, fares and road conditions vary. Choose the safest practical option for your family. A difficult or unsafe journey is not an environmental achievement.

What you need

  • A short route with safe crossings and a weather backup.
  • A suitable, correctly adjusted stroller or carrier.
  • Transport-specific safety equipment and its instructions.

Where to start

  1. 1. Test a short route

Try the trip to a shop or childcare when you are not rushed. Check pavements, open drains, crossings, shade and traffic. Avoid floodwater and change the plan when weather or road conditions are unsafe.

  2. 2. Fit the carrier carefully

Use a carrier suited to baby's size and development. Keep their face visible, nose and mouth clear, and chin off their chest. Watch for overheating. Never cycle with baby in a sling or wearable carrier.

  3. 3. Check cycling readiness

Seats, trailers and cargo bikes have different size and developmental limits. Follow the specific manufacturer's instructions and ask your child's clinician if readiness is uncertain. A newborn insert does not make every setup safe for a newborn.

  4. 4. Check equipment and local rules

Use an appropriate, correctly fitted cycling helmet and the supplied harness. Check brakes, attachment points and stability. Ask the relevant local authority about current cycling rules; do not assume rules or road conditions are the same everywhere.

  5. 5. Plan the actual public-transport ride

Ask bus, rail or ferry operators about stroller access, designated spaces and safety requirements. Jeepneys and other vehicles may lack suitable restraint arrangements; assess this before boarding and choose a safer option where possible. A wearable carrier is not a crash restraint.

  6. 6. Keep a safe backup

For car journeys, use a suitable, correctly installed child restraint. Confirm compatibility when booking transport rather than assuming a taxi or ride-hailing vehicle provides one. Pack feeding supplies and a change of clothes, and allow time for safe stops.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Using age as the only test Development, equipment limits, road conditions and applicable rules also matter.
  • ❌ Calling a car journey a failure Disability, distance, unsafe roads and missing transport links are real constraints. Safety comes first.

Questions dads ask

When can my baby ride on a bicycle?

There is no single age for every setup. Check the equipment instructions, developmental readiness and current local rules. Seek clinical advice if you are unsure, and do not ride with baby in a wearable carrier.
