♻️ Second-hand baby gear: buy less, check carefully
Second-hand gear can reduce spending, but a friendly seller or attractive listing is not a safety check. Prioritise a safe sleep space, feeding supplies, clothes and suitable transport, then buy extras as you need them.
What you need
- A short list agreed with your co-parent.
- The exact model, manufacturing details and manufacturer's instructions.
- Manufacturer recall information and advice from the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry for relevant product-safety questions.
Where to start
1. Buy for your actual routine
Think about your home, storage and usual journeys. Prepare a safe sleep space and, for car travel, a suitable child restraint. Borrowing from relatives is optional; apply the same checks as you would to a purchase.
2. Inspect before paying
Check for cracks, loose fittings, missing parts, damaged straps and recalls. Ask for clear model labels and instructions. Wash clothes before use and remove loose cords or damaged fasteners. A marketplace rating is not proof of safety.
3. Verify the car seat's history
Avoid seats with unknown crash histories. Check the manufacturer's lifespan, crash-replacement instructions, size limits, parts and vehicle compatibility. Ask a qualified child-restraint professional about installation and current Philippine requirements if unsure.
4. Check the sleep space carefully
Choose a stable crib or bassinet designed for infant sleep, with a firm, flat, clean, intact mattress that fits exactly. Put baby on their back in their own clear space, in your room for at least six months. Keep pillows, blankets and toys out; adult beds and sofas are not safe substitutes.
5. Check rentals item by item
Inspect the actual item, not just sample photographs. Confirm cleaning, recalls, maintenance, instructions and suitability for your child. Include deposits, delivery and return charges when comparing costs.
6. Wait on the extras
Buy gradually. Easy cleaning, safe use and repairable parts matter more than connected features or matching sets.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Buying a car seat with no history A bargain cannot resolve doubts about crash damage, missing parts or usable lifespan.
- ❌ Assuming new means suitable New gear still needs to fit your baby, your vehicle or home, and be used correctly.
Questions dads ask
Can I use a second-hand car seat?
Only if its history, condition, parts, lifespan and suitability can be reliably verified. Check recalls and installation instructions. If uncertain, choose another seat.
Does the mattress have to be new?
Its condition and fit matter. It must be firm, flat, clean, undamaged and an exact fit. Replace it if you cannot verify those points. A new mattress alone does not prevent sleep-related deaths.
