🌱 Eco-parenting · From starting complementary foods, usually around 6 months

🥕 Baby meals: homemade, packaged and pressure-free

Homemade today, packaged tomorrow: both can fit family life. Aim for varied foods, suitable textures and safe preparation. Organic food is not required, and cooking every meal yourself is not a measure of good parenting.

What you need

  • Affordable ingredients, including iron-rich foods.
  • Clean containers suitable for storage and heating.
  • Labels for contents and dates, plus dependable cold storage if saving food.

Where to start

  1. 1. Start with readiness

Offer complementary foods around six months when baby can hold their head steady, sit upright with support and swallow food rather than consistently push it out. Breast milk, formula or both remain important. Ask your pediatric team about individual readiness and growth.

  2. 2. Build meals from ordinary foods

Try soft kalabasa, mashed beans, well-cooked egg, finely shredded meat or carefully deboned fish, alongside suitable rice or other staples. Plain lugaw alone does not provide enough variety or iron. Adapt textures as skills develop and avoid added salt and sugar where practical.

  3. 3. Share safe preparation

Divide shopping, cooking and cleaning fairly. Wash hands and equipment, use safe water and cook food thoroughly. Introduce allergens in small amounts in safe forms; seek tailored advice for severe eczema or known allergy. Continue offering tolerated allergens.

  4. 4. Feed safely and responsively

Seat baby upright and supervise throughout. Avoid whole nuts, hard chunks, bones and other choking hazards; give no honey before one year. Follow hunger and fullness cues rather than insisting on a clean bowl. Professional infant first-aid training is useful for every caregiver.

  5. 5. Plan storage around your electricity supply

Cool food promptly and refrigerate or freeze safely in labelled portions. Thaw in the refrigerator or during cooking, not on the counter. Discard food touched by baby's used spoon. If refrigeration is unreliable or an outage makes safety uncertain, use small fresh portions rather than saving food.

  6. 6. Keep an affordable backup

Compare seasonal market produce, plain frozen foods and suitable canned or packaged options. Check seals, ingredients, texture and opening instructions. A fruit pouch alone is not a balanced meal. Choose what you will use, not what advertising says you need.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Treating organic as nutritionally complete The label does not tell you whether a meal supplies enough variety or iron.
  • ❌ Guessing about restricted diets Ask a pediatric clinician or registered nutritionist-dietitian about allergies, restricted diets or vegan infant feeding.

Questions dads ask

Can we alternate homemade and packaged food?

Yes. Choose varied, age-appropriate foods and textures, and follow safe preparation and storage instructions.

What if our water or refrigerator is unreliable?

Ask your barangay health centre or rural health unit about safe water. Make small portions for immediate use or use suitable unopened shelf-stable foods. Do not keep leftovers without safe cold storage.
