New dad: from the first plans to the first years
Appointments, feeding, nights and paperwork. Take it one stage at a time, together.
Your timeline
Birth to two weeks
Share feeding, changing, soothing and meals. Confirm follow-up appointments and the birth-registration deadline. Never shake a baby; if overwhelmed, put them safely down and take a short break.
Leave and family paperwork
Parental leave depends on eligibility, birth/adoption date and applicable employment law; payment is not the same as protected time off.
Your country
For births/adoptions from 1 July 2025, eligible families can receive up to 120 Parental Leave Pay days (24 five-day weeks); from 1 July 2026 this increases to 130 days (26 weeks), with 20 days reserved for a partner when partnered at claim. This is not 26 weeks of paid leave for each parent. Services Australia payment eligibility and Fair Work unpaid job-protected leave are separate.
International comparison: Spain
Spain increased birth/childcare leave from 16 to 19 paid weeks per parent in 2025, and to 32 weeks for single-parent families. Two weeks (four for single-parent families) can be used flexibly until age eight. Transitional eligibility and claim dates matter; do not revert to a blanket 16-week claim.
Check before budgeting
