💼 Gear & logistics · From pregnancy to baby's first 3 months
🗓️ The major milestones of expectant and new fatherhood
Plan pregnancy, birth and early parenthood around your local care team and administration rules.
What to keep handy
- Your own calendar, loaded with all the medical appointments (don't just rely on your partner's phone).
- A dedicated folder (physical or digital) with essential paperwork: pregnancy certificates, birth records, employer notices.
- A go-to contacts list: hospital/maternity unit, midwife, family doctor, health insurance.
Step by step
1. During pregnancy
Choose a maternity provider, ask about classes, plan transport and review leave eligibility and notice requirements early. A packed bag by week 36 is a planning suggestion, not a legal deadline.
2. After birth
Use SSA rankings for popularity, not as naming law. Birth registration and permitted characters/names are governed by the state or territory of birth. Ask the hospital and vital-records office about the birth certificate, legal parentage and Social Security number application; no single nationwide naming deadline is supplied here.
3. Follow-up
Book newborn and postpartum care before discharge using the local schedule; do not assume the first infant visit is at one month or all first vaccinations are at two months.
4. Leave
Federal FMLA provides eligible workers of covered employers up to 12 workweeks of unpaid, job-protected leave, not universal paid paternity leave. Eligibility and employer coverage matter. Check state paid-leave programs and employer benefits separately; payment and job protection are different questions.
