🚗 Installing a car seat correctly
Use a locally approved restraint appropriate for baby and the vehicle.
Gear you'll need
- Locally approved restraint
- Restraint and vehicle manuals
Step-by-step guide
1. Country rules
Choose a US-compliant restraint, not an EU i-Size seat merely because it is sold overseas. State use laws vary. Keep a newborn rear-facing and continue to the manufacturer’s rear-facing height or weight limit. Follow the seat and vehicle manuals for belt or lower-anchor installation; NHTSA allows no more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) movement at the belt path.
2. Install from the manuals
Use the back seat. Never put a rear-facing restraint in front of an active airbag. Follow the exact belt path, recline, anchor/tether and harness-position instructions for the approved seat; do not transfer instructions between standards.
3. Fit and travel
Keep the harness snug, avoid bulky coats under it, and check recalls and expiry/service life. Do not use the car seat as a routine sleep space outside the vehicle.
