🚪 Where to stand when the epidural goes in
Whether you can stay during epidural placement depends on the maternity unit, the clinical situation and your partner's wishes. Ask the anaesthesia team where you can safely support your partner without obstructing care.
Why the team may need space
- Infection prevention: the team prepares a sterile field around the insertion site. Do not touch equipment, drapes or the prepared area.
- Safe positioning: staff need space to help your partner stay in position and monitor them.
- A clear plan: ask where to wait and how staff will call you back if you need to leave.
Supporting your partner during placement
1. Ask before the procedure
Check the Philippine hospital's birth-companion policy and ask your partner what support they want. The anaesthetist should explain the procedure and answer their questions.
2. Follow the team's positioning instructions
If you stay, stand or sit where directed, usually away from the sterile equipment. Offer a hand or calm reassurance if your partner wants it; let staff guide their position.
3. Stay nearby if asked to leave
Step out promptly and confirm where to wait. Take a drink or a brief bathroom break only if staff know how to reach you.
4. Return and check in
Ask what help is useful once you return. Pain relief can take time or need adjustment; tell staff if your partner remains uncomfortable or feels unwell.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Treating a request to leave as rejection Room access can change for clinical reasons. You can ask for a brief explanation without delaying care.
- ❌ Staying quiet when you feel faint Tell staff and sit where directed. Looking after your own safety helps keep the clinical area clear.
