👶 Care & hygiene · From birth, as needed
️ How to trim baby's nails gently
Baby nails can be sharp from birth. You can gently file rough edges early on; there is no need to wait until one month. If the nail is hard to distinguish from the skin, use a fine file or ask your pediatric team to demonstrate.
What you'll need
- Baby nail scissors with rounded tips or baby nail clippers.
- A fine emery board.
- Good lighting and clean gauze in case of a small nick.
A calm nail-care routine
1. Choose a settled moment
Work when baby is calm or sleeping safely and you are fully awake. Another willing caregiver can help steady their hand. Stop if baby wriggles.
2. Separate nail from skin
Hold one finger gently and press the fingertip pad away from the nail. Only trim the free edge you can clearly see.
3. Trim a little at a time
Follow the natural curve of fingernails without cutting deeply into the sides. Cut toenails straight across and avoid cutting them too short.
4. Smooth and check
File sharp edges gently. Check nails regularly rather than following a fixed schedule.
5. Handle a nick
Apply gentle, continuous pressure with clean gauze. Seek care if bleeding does not stop or redness, swelling or pus develops. Avoid small adhesive bandages that could come off into baby's mouth.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Biting or peeling nails This can tear skin and introduce germs. Use clean tools designed for small nails.
- ❌ Trying to finish while baby struggles It is fine to do one or two nails now and the rest later. Clear visibility matters more than speed.
