🚪 Where to stand when the epidural goes in
Whether a support person can remain during epidural placement depends on the maternity unit, clinical situation and anaesthesia team.
Why the temporary eviction?
- Sterile technique and a clear working area help reduce infection risk.
- Laser focus: The anaesthetist and nurse need zero distractions, plenty of elbow room, and total calm.
What to do while you're in the hallway
1. Step out without arguing
The moment the medical team asks you to leave the room, just nod and step out. No negotiating.
2. Take a quick pit stop
Use these minutes wisely: hit the bathroom, chug some water, or smash a granola bar.
3. Gear up for the next round
Decompress, take a breath, and get ready to go back in. The best part? When you walk back in, your partner will finally be getting some sweet, sweet pain relief.
4. Local guidance
Ask the anaesthesia team where you can safely stand and whether you may remain. Follow instructions and infection-control rules; do not promise that every hospital excludes partners.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Assuming the same policy everywhere Ask the team where you may stand and when you may return if asked to step out.
