🥝 Fun fact & gift idea: the “Daddy Weiki” hardy kiwi

Nature has a sense of humour: the “Kiwi Daddy” (almost) exists for real. It is called Daddy Weiki (Actinidia arguta 'Weikii'), an all-male plant that bears no fruit itself but lets the whole family harvest. The perfect quirky Father's Day gift.

Quick product sheet

  • Official name: Actinidia arguta 'Weikii' (male hardy kiwi, smooth-skinned mini kiwi).
  • Superpower: highly effective pollinator, compact and frost-hardy from -7 °C down to -15 °C.
  • Where to plant: in the ground at the foot of a pergola or trellis, or in a pot on a balcony or terrace (3 to 5 m when mature).
  • Position: full sun or partial shade.
  • Care: easy, with regular watering.

The gardener's fun fact

  1. 1. A purely male plant

Daddy Weiki produces no fruit. Its job lies elsewhere, and it is essential.

  2. 2. It brings life all around it

In early summer it opens beautiful, very fragrant white flowers that pollinate up to 6 or 7 female plants nearby, such as Issai or Ken's Red.

  3. 3. The protective dad of the garden

Without Daddy Weiki nearby, no kiwi harvest for the rest of the family in autumn. Hard to find a better symbol.

  4. 4. From dads who've been there

Plant it with the kids alongside one or two female plants: every autumn, picking the little fruits becomes a family ritual.

  5. 5. Real talk

Like this kiwi, your role does not always show in the end result, but without you nothing would grow the same way. And when someone gives you a plant that looks like you, you might as well look after it.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Planting it alone and hoping for fruit It will never bear kiwis: it needs at least one female plant nearby for a harvest.
  • ❌ Forgetting the support It is a climbing vine: without a trellis, pergola or sturdy stake, it sprawls everywhere.
  • ❌ Letting the pot dry out In a pot, keep watering regular, especially in summer and during flowering.

Questions dads ask

Does Daddy Weiki produce kiwis?

No, it is a male plant: it pollinates nearby female plants, which bear the fruit in autumn.

Can I grow it on a balcony?

Yes, its growth stays manageable (3 to 5 m when mature) and it does well in a large pot with a support to climb.
