🚗 Installing a car seat correctly
Use a locally approved restraint appropriate for baby and the vehicle.
Gear you'll need
- Locally approved restraint
- Restraint and vehicle manuals
Step-by-step guide
1. Country rules
New Zealand accepts multiple approved standards: AS/NZS 1754 marking; an accepted European E mark (ECE R44 or R129); or FMVSS 213 with the required New Zealand S mark. Do not claim AS/NZS is the only accepted standard. Children under seven must use an approved suitable restraint; at seven use one if available. Keep babies rear-facing to the seat’s rear-facing limits and seek a child-restraint technician’s help.
2. Install from the manuals
Use the back seat. Never put a rear-facing restraint in front of an active airbag. Follow the exact belt path, recline, anchor/tether and harness-position instructions for the approved seat; do not transfer instructions between standards.
3. Fit and travel
Keep the harness snug, avoid bulky coats under it, and check recalls and expiry/service life. Do not use the car seat as a routine sleep space outside the vehicle.
