😭 Getting through evening crying

Some young babies cry more in the late afternoon or evening, but timing alone does not explain why. Check their needs and health before assuming it is normal fussiness. Cry sounds overlap and are not a validated diagnostic system; you do not need to decode a special sound to respond well.

What may help

  • A calm space with soft lighting.
  • A clean nappy and usual feeding supplies.
  • An optional correctly fitted infant carrier.
  • A clear cot ready for a safe pause.

Work through the basics

  1. 1. Check baby first

Look for illness, injury, uncomfortable clothing or a wet or soiled nappy. Under 3 months, a temperature of 38°C or above needs urgent medical assessment. Call 112 for breathing difficulty, blue colour or floppiness. Emergency routing and arrival vary in Nigeria: keep your maternity or nearest emergency facility's number and a transport backup ready.

  2. 2. Offer a responsive feed

Look for hunger cues such as rooting or hands to mouth; feeding needs do not follow a rigid clock. Offer breast milk or formula according to your feeding plan, without forcing a top-up.

  3. 3. Try gentle comfort

Hold baby upright with head support and offer a gentle back rub if they seem windy. Check that clothing and room warmth are comfortable. Change a wet or dirty nappy rather than repeatedly changing a clean one.

  4. 4. Reduce stimulation

Try quiet talking, slow rocking or skin-to-skin with a fully awake adult. Keep baby's face visible, nose and mouth clear, and neck comfortably positioned. Move baby to their cot if you become sleepy.

  5. 5. Walk safely if helpful

A carrier may help while you are awake: keep baby high enough to kiss, with the face visible and chin off the chest. If using background sound, keep it quiet and away from baby's ears.

  6. 6. Share the load and pause

Ask your partner or another trusted adult to take over. If overwhelmed, put baby on their back in their own firm, flat, clear cot and step away briefly to regain calm, checking back. Never shake baby. Seek medical advice for persistent unusual crying, poor feeding or fewer wet nappies.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Trying everything at once Rapid changes in noise, movement and handling may make settling harder. Try one gentle approach at a time and follow baby's response.
  • ❌ Treating crying as a parenting failure Some crying continues despite attentive care. Share soothing, meals and household work, and seek support rather than pushing through exhaustion alone.
