🍳 Eating well while caring for a baby
Aim for reliable, simple meals rather than perfect cooking. Share shopping and preparation so neither parent carries the whole job. Despite the familiar image of cooking with baby in your arms, put baby somewhere safe before handling heat or knives.
Useful basics
- A short meal list: rice with vegetables and beans, egg dishes, soups or noodles with protein.
- Labelled food containers, fridge and freezer space, and a shared shopping list.
- Easy snacks and water within reach of feeding or resting areas, away from baby's reach.
Keep meals manageable
1. Make cooking a baby-free task
Have another adult care for baby or use a safe cot nearby, away from cooking hazards. For sleep, place baby on their back on a flat, firm surface in their separate, clear cot, without blankets, toys or pillows; no hats indoors. Do not hold or wear baby at the stove, while chopping, or while carrying hot food and drinks.
2. Cook extra when practical
Make an extra portion of beans, soup or another freezer-friendly dish when reliable cold storage is available. Cool and refrigerate or freeze promptly in shallow containers; do not leave cooked rice or other perishables sitting out in the heat. If power interruptions make cold storage unreliable, cook smaller portions rather than relying on stored leftovers.
3. Prep a few building blocks
Take turns washing vegetables, portioning protein and planning quick meals. Reheat safely stored leftovers thoroughly until steaming hot throughout, then cool your serving enough to eat safely.
4. Use flexible meal breaks
Swap care so each parent can eat. A sandwich, fruit with yoghurt or toast with eggs can be a useful meal or snack when a full cooking session is unrealistic.
5. Accept suitable help
Ask relatives, neighbours or friends for meals you enjoy and can safely store. Postnatal food traditions differ among Nigerian families and are optional; agree on preferences rather than assuming a particular custom applies. Discuss restrictive diets or herbal products with a qualified clinician rather than using them instead of care.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Making food another source of guilt Takeaway, simple meals and snacks can all fit. Aim for variety over time and ask for support if access to food or appetite is a problem.
- ❌ Shopping without checking supplies A shared list reduces duplicate purchases and extra trips. Keep a few shelf-stable backup ingredients.
