🚗 Installing a car seat correctly
A correctly fitted child restraint helps protect your child in a crash. Choose one that suits their size and your vehicle, and keep them rear-facing until they reach the seat's rear-facing height or weight limit.
Gear you'll need
- A child restraint suitable for your child's height and weight and compatible with your vehicle; check the manufacturer's instructions and seek qualified fitting advice if unsure.
- The car-seat manual and vehicle handbook.
- The seat's approved ISOFIX fittings or the vehicle seatbelt, as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation checks
1. Choose the position and direction
Use a suitable rear seat and keep your child rear-facing within the seat's limits. Never place a rear-facing restraint in front of an active airbag; check both manuals for permitted seating positions.
2. Secure the seat correctly
Follow the exact belt route or ISOFIX procedure. Fit any required support leg or tether. Do not combine installation methods unless the manufacturer permits it.
3. Check stability and recline
Use the seat's indicators and manual to check installation tightness and the correct recline for your child's size. Ask a trained child-restraint adviser to inspect it if one is available; otherwise contact the manufacturer for fitting guidance.
4. Fit the harness
For rear-facing seats, shoulder straps generally sit at or just below the shoulders; follow your seat's instructions. Keep straps flat and snug, with no webbing you can pinch at shoulder level.
5. Check before every journey
Check buckles, harness fit and hot surfaces, especially after parking in the sun. Never leave your child alone in a vehicle. At your destination, move a sleeping baby onto their back in their own flat, firm, clear cot or bassinet, without blankets, pillows or toys. Remove hats indoors.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Adding bulky layers or unapproved accessories Thick clothing, extra cushions and aftermarket inserts can interfere with harness fit. Use only accessories approved for that seat.
- ❌ Turning forward-facing just because of age Follow the restraint's rear-facing size limits rather than treating a birthday as the reason to switch.
