🤗 Holding your baby won't make them spoiled

Comforting a baby is care, not spoiling. Babies depend on adults for food, safety and reassurance, and your everyday responses help build trust. You do not have to get every moment right or hold your baby constantly to build a loving relationship.

What responsive care looks like

  • Crying communicates a need or discomfort; it is not a reason to label a baby naughty.
  • A familiar voice, gentle touch or cuddle can help a baby settle, although no method works every time.
  • Either parent can build a close bond through feeding, bathing, nappies, play and comforting.
  • Toddlers still need support with big feelings, alongside calm, age-appropriate boundaries.

Build trust through everyday care

  1. 1. Check and respond

Look for hunger, a wet nappy, tiredness, discomfort or illness. Try your voice, eye contact or a cuddle. Cry sounds are difficult to distinguish and are not a validated diagnostic system.

  2. 2. Keep familiar routines

Use a gentle song, a quiet bedtime sequence or the same reassuring words. Predictability can help, but routines can change with your baby's needs.

  3. 3. Own daily care

Take responsibility for regular care rather than waiting to be invited. During any optional pantang or confinement arrangements, agree how relatives can support both parents without excluding either from bonding.

  4. 4. Take a safe break when overwhelmed

Place baby on their back in their own clear cot and step away briefly to regain calm or call someone for support. Never shake a baby. A safe pause does not undo your bond.

  5. 5. Separate cuddles from sleep

If you feel sleepy, put baby on their back on a flat, firm surface in their own clear sleep space, in your room for at least the first 6 months. Keep pillows, blankets and toys out; a sofa or shared bed is not a safe substitute.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Treating every cry as a test Start by checking what your child needs. For toddlers, name the feeling while keeping a gentle boundary rather than assuming bad intentions.
  • ❌ Expecting an instant bond Closeness can grow gradually. Keep sharing everyday care, and speak with a healthcare professional if distress or disconnection is persistent.
