️ Encouraging free movement
Give your baby regular chances to move, reach and explore at their own pace. Dad can share floor play and offer support without forcing a position or comparing milestones with other babies.
Gear to get ready
- A firm, clean play mat on the floor.
- A few age-appropriate toys without small detachable parts.
- A clear space away from stairs, cords and sharp edges.
What to do
1. Start with back play
While your baby is awake, lay them on their back on the mat. Let them kick, look around and discover their hands.
2. Include tummy time
Offer short, frequent periods on their tummy while awake and directly supervised. Get down beside them and build up gradually as they become comfortable.
3. Invite reaching and rolling
Place an easy-to-grab toy nearby. Give them time to try, then help if they become upset or stuck; never pull them into a movement.
4. Support without forcing
Brief supported sitting can be part of play when your baby has suitable head control. Stay close, avoid leaving them propped with pillows, and allow plenty of unrestricted floor time.
5. Review progress together
Discuss movement concerns at Klinik Kesihatan and bring the child health record. Seek advice promptly for loss of skills or persistent one-sided movement. If baby falls asleep, move them onto their back in their own firm, flat, clear sleep space.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Using a wheeled baby walker Walkers allow babies to reach hazards and fall down steps. They are not needed to learn to walk.
- ❌ Leaving baby to practise alone Floor play still needs supervision. Keep pets and older children's small toys away from the play area.
