🍼 Measuring and prepping a baby bottle

Powdered formula is not sterile and scoop sizes are not universal.

Step-by-Step

  1. 1. What to prepare

Wash hands, clean the work surface and clean and sterilise feeding equipment. Measure water first and add the exact powder amount with the scoop supplied for that product.

  2. 2. What to check

Prepare one feed at a time where possible; cool safely before offering, never microwave, never prop a bottle and discard milk left after a feed. Do not dilute, concentrate or add cereal.

  3. 3. In South Africa

Ask your clinic to demonstrate safe formula preparation for the exact product, including safe water, clean equipment and exact mixing. Plan for water interruptions and power cuts; do not keep milk in a fridge that has lost safe temperature. If a parent has HIV, follow the current prevention-of-vertical-transmission and feeding plan with ART support; do not stop breastfeeding or switch feeds on this guide’s advice.
