👶 Baby carrier or pushchair: choosing for your journey
Choose according to your baby, the terrain and what you can comfortably manage. No piece of equipment is essential everywhere, and a reclined pushchair isn’t automatically a bed.
What you’ll need
- Equipment suitable for your baby’s age, weight and development.
- Instructions, adjustments you’ve tried out and details of accessible routes.
- Weather protection compatible with the equipment.
Before and during the journey
1. Think about the terrain
- Stairs, platforms, pavements, heat: picture the actual journey with your luggage.
- A pushchair can save you from carrying for long periods; a carrier can make stairs easier. Try things out before leaving.
2. Keep airways clear in a carrier
- Follow the manufacturer’s limits and fitting instructions. Your baby’s face must stay visible, their nose and mouth clear, and their chin away from their chest.
- Check breathing and position regularly. For a small baby or a particular medical situation, ask a professional for a demonstration.
3. Check the pushchair and luggage
- Check the brakes, harness, stability and where bags will go. Don’t hang a heavy bag that could tip it over.
- Accepted dimensions depend on the transport operator: a ‘cabin-size’ label doesn’t guarantee acceptance everywhere.
4. Heat, feeds and sleep
- Don’t cover the pushchair with fabric that blocks airflow. Adjust activities to the heat and take breaks.
- Don’t feed your baby in a sling or carrier. Seated equipment is not a regular sleep space: use a suitable sleep surface as soon as possible once you’re no longer travelling.
5. Between us
The right equipment is what you know how to adjust and carry. If several adults are travelling, share the carrying rather than always wearing out the same person.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Choosing something just because it’s compact Suitability for your baby and the journey matters more than folded size.
- ❌ Hiding your baby’s face under a muslin You need to be able to see your baby and check their breathing.
- ❌ Mistaking a reclined seat for a safe sleep space The instructions must specify the permitted uses.
Questions dads ask
Do we have to take both?
No. Consider the terrain, walking times and what you can carry without exhausting yourselves.
Is a back carrier suitable from birth?
Not automatically. Follow the manufacturer’s development, age and weight requirements; some require your baby to sit independently.
