🗣️ Why babies say papa and mama: the story of babbling

Your baby is going ba-ba-ba while you wait for Tatay or Dad? Repeated syllables usually begin as sound exploration, not deliberate names. Families give those sounds meaning through everyday interaction, in whichever languages they use.

The short version

  • Lallation means babbling, especially repeated syllables.
  • Pa-pa does not automatically mean a baby is naming their father.
  • In Georgian, mama means father and deda means mother.
  • Similar sounds do not prove a shared language origin.

Sounds, words and family habits

  1. 1. Babbling is exploration

Babies practise coordinating lips, tongue, voice and breath with sounds such as ba-ba-ba and ma-ma-ma. Timing and sounds vary. A repeated syllable is not by itself proof of a meaningful first word.

  2. 2. Why similar sounds recur

Lip sounds such as b, p and m occur in babbling. Linguist Roman Jakobson proposed that some parent words are connected to early sounds and adults' interpretations. This is an explanation, not a rule that every baby or language follows.

  3. 3. Meaning depends on language

Georgian მამა, mama, means father, while დედა, deda, means mother. A familiar sound can mean something different elsewhere, so avoid assuming all parental words have the same meaning.

  4. 4. Bring it back to your family

Your child may hear Tatay, Itay, Papa, Dad or another name in your home languages. Use those words naturally: 'Tatay is here' or 'Here's Papa.' No need to make everyone choose one language or compete over the first word.

  5. 5. Context changes words too

Japanese chichi is used, among other contexts, when speaking about your own father outside the family; otōsan is commonly used to address him or refer to someone else's father. Italian Babbo is particularly associated with Tuscany. Family usage still varies.

  6. 6. Answer, pause and watch development

Copy a sound, smile and leave space for a reply. Gestures and signs count as communication too. If babbling disappears, responses to sound change or you have concerns, ask your pediatric team or barangay health centre about hearing and developmental assessment.

Questions dads ask

What is lallation?

Babbling, especially repeated syllables such as ba-ba-ba. These sounds are not automatically words addressed to a person.

Do babies always say papa before mama?

No. Sounds and word order vary, and repeated sounds may not name anyone yet. Seek professional advice about communication or hearing concerns rather than relying on a first-word rule.
