🗣️ Why babies say papa and mama: the story of babbling

Your baby is going ba-ba-ba and you are waiting for Baba, Nna or Dad? Those syllables may simply be vocal exploration. Similar sounds appear in many languages, but they are not automatically meaningful first words.

The short version

  • Lallation means babbling, especially repeated syllables.
  • A repeated pa-pa does not necessarily mean dad yet.
  • In Georgian, mama means father and deda means mother.
  • Similar sounds do not prove a shared origin.

Sounds, words and family habits

  1. 1. Babbling is exploration

Repeated sounds such as ba-ba-ba and ma-ma-ma let babies practise coordinating lips, tongue, voice and breath. Timing and sounds vary; a syllable alone does not show that baby is naming someone.

  2. 2. Why similar sounds recur

Lip sounds such as b, p and m occur in babbling. Linguist Roman Jakobson proposed a link between early sounds, adults' interpretations and some parental words. This is an explanation, not a universal script.

  3. 3. Meaning comes from use

In a Nigerian multilingual home, adults may respond using Baba, Bàbá, Nna, Dad, Daddy, Papa or another family name. A sound becomes more clearly a word when a child uses it consistently with meaning, not merely because adults recognise the syllables.

  4. 4. Familiar sounds can mean something else

Georgian მამა, mama, means father, while დედა, deda, means mother. The sound alone cannot tell you the family role across languages.

  5. 5. Context matters too

Japanese chichi can be used when speaking about your own father to someone outside the family; otōsan is commonly used to address him or refer to someone else's father. Italian Babbo is particularly associated with Tuscany. Family usage varies.

  6. 6. Answer, then leave space

Respond warmly to baby's sounds and pause for their turn. Use your natural home languages without a dad-versus-mum contest. If communication skills disappear or you have hearing concerns, contact your primary health centre or your child's clinician.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Treating first sounds as a popularity vote The order of sounds does not measure attachment or either parent's contribution.
