🌀 Helping a baby with colic-like crying

Colic describes repeated prolonged crying in an otherwise healthy baby; its cause is not always clear, and it is not simply proof of trapped wind. It often improves over the first few months. Ask your maternity team or local primary health centre to assess persistent crying rather than diagnosing it yourself.

What to have ready

  • A safe floor mat for awake, supervised comfort measures.
  • A burp cloth.
  • A clear cot and a plan for sharing care when you need rest.

Check, comfort and get support

  1. 1. Rule out warning signs

A swollen, hard or painful tummy, green or bloody vomit, blood in poo, poor feeding or unusual drowsiness needs urgent assessment. Under 3 months, a temperature of 38°C or above also needs urgent assessment. Call 112 for breathing difficulty, blue colour or floppiness. Emergency routing and arrival vary in Nigeria: keep your maternity or nearest emergency facility's number and a transport backup ready.

  2. 2. Review feeding

Feed responsively and offer gentle burping if baby seems uncomfortable. A nurse or feeding professional can check breastfeeding attachment or bottle flow and pacing without blaming your feeding choice.

  3. 3. Try a gentle tummy massage

When baby is awake and settled, lightly stroke the tummy in slow circles. Avoid pressure and stop if baby seems uncomfortable; massage does not reliably resolve every episode.

  4. 4. Offer gentle movement

With baby awake on their back, slowly bend and straighten the legs without forcing them. Alternatively, try a supported upright cuddle and slow walking. Never shake or bounce vigorously.

  5. 5. Protect rest

For sleep, place baby on their back in their own firm, flat, clear cot. Take turns with your partner or another trusted caregiver. If overwhelmed, put baby safely down and take a brief calming break.

  6. 6. Discuss ongoing symptoms

Note feeding, wet nappies, vomiting and crying patterns for your clinician. Discuss any formula change, dietary restriction, medicine or supplement before trying it.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Applying heat or unproven remedies Do not place heating pads or hot-water bottles on baby. Herbal preparations and gripe water are not substitutes for clinical assessment; never give honey under 1 year.
  • ❌ Assuming every cry is colic Crying sounds are hard to distinguish and do not diagnose gas, hunger or illness. A new or worsening pattern deserves a fresh check of baby and medical advice when needed.
