🥕 Baby meals: homemade, packaged and pressure-free

Homemade today, packaged tomorrow: both can fit family life. Aim for varied food, suitable textures and safe preparation. Organic ingredients and cooking every meal from scratch are not requirements.

What you need

  • Affordable ingredients, including iron-rich foods.
  • Clean utensils and suitable storage containers.
  • Labels for contents and dates.

Where to start

  1. 1. Look for readiness

Start around six months when baby can hold their head steady, sit upright with support and swallow food rather than consistently push it out. Ask your local primary health care centre or child's clinician if unsure. Breast milk or infant formula remains important; follow appetite and growth advice rather than a fixed milk target. If using powdered infant formula, prepare it with safe water at least 70°C at mixing and the exact water-to-powder ratio on the label, then cool safely before feeding. Never prop a bottle or microwave milk.

  2. 2. Build simple, varied meals

Try soft rice porridge with well-cooked minced meat, fish carefully checked for bones, mashed beans or tofu, plus vegetables. Plain porridge alone offers limited variety. Adjust texture as skills develop rather than staying only with smooth purées.

  3. 3. Share safe preparation

Share shopping, cooking and cleaning. Wash hands, use safe water and cook food thoroughly. Offer allergens in small amounts in safe forms, such as well-cooked egg or smooth peanut paste thinned into food. Seek tailored advice for severe eczema or existing allergy; keep tolerated allergens in the diet.

  4. 4. Prevent choking

Seat baby upright and supervise throughout meals. Avoid whole nuts, hard chunks and other choking hazards. Learn infant choking response through professional first-aid training. Do not give honey before one year.

  5. 5. Protect the cold chain

Cool cooked food promptly and refrigerate or freeze safely; do not leave rice porridge or other meals sitting in the heat. Label portions, thaw in the fridge or during cooking, and follow food-specific storage advice. Discard food left in baby's feeding bowl.

  6. 6. Keep affordable backups

Compare fresh, plain frozen and suitable canned foods, choosing options without added salt or sugar where possible. For packaged baby food, check seals, texture and opening instructions. Without reliable refrigeration, prepare small fresh portions or use suitable unopened shelf-stable food.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Treating a label as a complete meal Organic or baby-branded does not guarantee a varied, nutritionally balanced meal.
  • ❌ Guessing about restricted diets Seek a qualified dietitian or clinician for allergies or restricted diets. Vegan infant diets need careful professional planning.

Questions dads ask

Can we alternate homemade and packaged food?

Yes. Choose varied, suitable foods and textures and follow safe preparation and storage instructions.

What if the water or fridge is unreliable?

Follow local public-health advice on safe water. Make small portions for immediate use and do not save food without dependable cold storage.
