🧴 Preventing household poisoning
Young children may taste medicines, cleaners and other household products. Prevention means locked storage, original packaging and safe dosing—not relying on a child to understand warnings.
Useful safeguards
- Lockable storage for medicines, chemicals, pesticides and other harmful products.
- The correct medicine-measuring syringe and a shared record of doses.
- Original labels and packaging, kept readable in case professional advice is needed.
- Never call medicine sweets or candy to persuade a child to take it.
Reduce risks and know what to do
1. Lock away all medicines
Include vitamins, supplements, herbal preparations, medicated oils and adult medicines. Check visitors' handbags and bedside tables. Store refrigerated medicines in a secure container as advised by the pharmacist.
2. Secure cleaners and pesticides
Lock away detergent pods, bleach, drain cleaner, insecticides, rat poison and DIY chemicals. Keep children away while products are in use and follow ventilation and storage instructions.
3. Keep original containers
Never put chemicals in drink bottles or food containers. Close caps immediately after use; child-resistant does not mean childproof. Do not mix cleaning products.
4. Check less obvious hazards
Keep cosmetics, nail-polish remover, essential oils, nicotine liquids and harmful plants inaccessible. Verify every child's medicine and dose with a doctor or pharmacist, and record doses so caregivers do not double up.
5. Act promptly on suspected exposure
Do not wait for symptoms: contact a healthcare professional or emergency department immediately for advice. Do not induce vomiting or give food, drinks or home remedies unless instructed. Keep the packaging and note what happened. Call 999 for breathing difficulty, seizures, collapse or floppiness.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Assuming natural products are harmless Herbal preparations, oils and supplements can be harmful when swallowed or incorrectly dosed. They should not replace clinical care.
- ❌ Leaving a product out during a quick job Children can reach it while your attention is elsewhere. Close and secure products whenever you pause.
