🍼 Measuring and preparing a formula bottle
Whether your family uses breastfeeding, formula or mixed feeding, you deserve practical support without guilt. Powdered formula is not sterile. Use safe water at least 70°C when mixing, following WHO guidance, and the exact water-to-powder ratio printed on your product.
What you'll need
- Cleaned and sterilised bottle, teat and preparation equipment.
- Safe drinking water, freshly boiled.
- An appropriate food thermometer to check mixing temperature.
- Suitable infant formula, within its expiry and opened-use dates, with its own scoop.
- A container of cold water for cooling the closed bottle.
Prepare one feed at a time
1. Clean your hands and workspace
Wash hands and clean the preparation surface. Clean and sterilise feeding equipment before use. Check the formula label and use only the scoop supplied with that product.
2. Measure hot water first
Boil safe drinking water and let it cool only enough that it remains at least 70°C when mixed. Measure the exact water amount into the bottle first. Bottled water is not necessarily sterile.
3. Add the correct powder
Add the exact number of level scoops required for that water amount. Do not pack scoops, add extra powder or dilute the feed. Close and mix as the product directs.
4. Cool before feeding
Cool the closed bottle under cold running water or in cold water, keeping water away from the teat and lid. Test a few drops on your inner wrist: it should feel comfortably lukewarm, not hot.
5. Feed responsively
Hold baby semi-upright with the head supported. Offer pauses and stop at fullness cues; never prop the bottle or insist on finishing. Amounts depend on baby's hunger, growth and clinical advice, not one universal target.
6. Discard and clean
Use the freshly prepared feed promptly. Discard milk left after feeding rather than saving or reheating it. If preparation or storage is difficult, ask your maternity team or Klinik Kesihatan for a safe plan.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Assuming all scoops use the same ratio Ratios vary by product. Too much or too little powder can harm baby; always check the current container.
- ❌ Microwaving or mixing with lukewarm water Microwaves create burn-causing hot spots. Lukewarm water does not provide the recommended heat step for powdered formula. For prescribed specialist formula, ask the clinical team to explain preparation.
