👶 Care & hygiene · From birth, when needed

️ Trimming baby's nails gently

Baby nails can be sharp from the early days. There is no need to wait until one month: gently file rough edges or trim when there is a clearly visible free edge. Ask your Klinik Kesihatan nurse to demonstrate if you feel unsure.

What to prepare

  • Baby nail clippers or rounded-tip baby nail scissors.
  • A fine emery board.
  • Good lighting and clean gauze in case of a small nick.

Small, careful movements

  1. 1. Choose a calm moment

Try when baby is relaxed or asleep and you are fully awake. Sit securely with good light. Another caregiver can help steady baby's hand if needed.

  2. 2. Separate skin from nail

Hold one finger gently and press the fingertip pad away from the nail. If you cannot clearly see the free edge, file it instead of cutting.

  3. 3. Trim conservatively

Make small cuts following the natural curve of fingernails. Cut toenails straight across, avoiding deep cuts at the corners. Leave a little free edge.

  4. 4. Smooth and stop

File sharp edges gently. Stop if baby wriggles; there is no need to finish every nail in one sitting.

  5. 5. Handle a nick

Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze until bleeding stops. Avoid a small adhesive plaster that could come off in baby's mouth. Seek medical advice if bleeding persists or redness, swelling or pus develops.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Biting or peeling nails This can tear the nail or skin and introduce germs. Use a clean file or baby-sized tool.
  • ❌ Cutting too close Do not dig into corners or cut skin attached to the nail. Pause rather than trying to finish while baby is moving.
