🎒 Packing the nappy bag for an outing

Pack for the length of your outing, with a little extra for delays. A shared checklist helps either parent head out confidently, whether you are visiting family, going to your local clinic or taking a short walk.

What to pack

  • Enough clean nappies for the outing, plus spares.
  • Gentle wipes, barrier cream and a foldable changing mat.
  • Two changes of clothes suited to the weather and an optional extra layer for cooler conditions.
  • Sealable bags for soiled clothes and nappies; keep them out of baby's reach.
  • Feeding supplies suited to breastfeeding, expressed milk, formula or mixed feeding; a nursing cover only if wanted.
  • For powdered formula: sterilised bottles, the exact measured powder and safe water kept at least 70°C for mixing.
  • An insulated cool bag with ice packs if transporting chilled expressed milk.
  • Burp cloths and an optional clean spare dummy, without a sleep-time clip or cord.
  • Baby's Mother Child Health Handbook, clinic contact details and any relevant medical or health-cover information.
  • For babies ready for solids around 6 months: suitable food, a spoon and bib.
  • A small age-appropriate toy and a sunhat for outdoor use; remove the hat indoors and for sleep.

Pack, check and go

  1. 1. Organise by task

Use separate pockets for changing, feeding and clean clothes. Keep dirty items sealed away from feeding equipment.

  2. 2. Plan the feed

Breastfeeding, formula and mixed feeding are all valid options. Powder is not sterile: mix with safe water at least 70°C, using the product's exact water-to-powder ratio, then cool before feeding. If this is impractical, ask a pharmacist or maternity team about suitable ready-to-feed formula.

  3. 3. Allow for heat and delays

Keep milk out of a hot car and maintain its cold chain. Use a ventilated pram canopy rather than draping a cloth over the pram. Offer milk responsively rather than using a fixed universal quantity.

  4. 4. Keep care safe away from home

Hold baby for feeds; never prop a bottle or microwave milk. Discard feed leftovers. For sleep, place baby on their back on a firm, flat, separate, clear baby sleep surface, with no blankets, toys or other loose items.

  5. 5. Restock together

Replace used supplies when practical after returning home. Regularly check clothing and nappy sizes, food dates and that both parents know where essentials are.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Assuming a flask stays hot enough A flask does not guarantee water remains at least 70°C. Check before mixing powdered formula; lukewarm water is not an adequate substitute.
  • ❌ Packing loose sleep accessories Keep comfort blankets, toys, clips and cords out of baby's sleep space. More equipment is not always more useful.
