🍼 Feeding your baby while travelling: breastfeeds, bottles and meals
Your baby’s feed shouldn’t depend on an open café or an unfamiliar tap. Plan a hygienic option suited to how they feed, with extra supplies for delays.
What you’ll need
- Clean equipment suited to your feeding method.
- Water and milk in line with product instructions and healthcare advice.
- Safe storage if needed, and familiar, suitable meals.
Before and during the journey
1. Plan where and how to prepare feeds
- Check access to safe water, handwashing facilities and clean equipment. A quick rinse at the café isn’t enough.
- If safe preparation isn’t possible, ask about a suitable alternative, such as ready-to-feed liquid formula if available and appropriate for your baby.
2. Don’t guess when making up a bottle
- Powdered formula is not sterile. Follow local health recommendations, product instructions and healthcare advice, particularly for a premature, very young or medically vulnerable baby.
- Measure water and powder precisely; don’t add extra water. Don’t mix hot and cold water at random to make a lukewarm bottle.
3. Measure hot water first
Boil safe drinking water and let it cool only enough that it remains at least 70°C when mixed. Measure the exact water amount into the bottle first. Bottled water is not necessarily sterile.
4. Follow storage and disposal instructions
- Prepare feeds close to feeding time where possible. Follow the time limits and cold-storage requirements for the milk you use.
- Discard leftovers after a feed according to the instructions. Warming isn’t compulsory; never use a microwave, which can create scalding hot spots.
5. Breastfeeding and starting solids
- If your partner is breastfeeding, ask what works for them and make yourselves comfortable together: you can handle bags, nappy changes and logistics. A cover isn’t necessary.
- For solids, keep textures appropriate, with your baby sitting upright and supervised. Stop the vehicle for feeds and meals; don’t feed your baby in a carrier.
6. Between us
A familiar meal and somewhere to settle are worth more than another accessory. Plan the next feed together rather than leaving all the organising to one person.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Relying on whatever lukewarm water is available It guarantees neither water quality nor safe preparation.
- ❌ Diluting formula to make it last longer The proportions must stay exact.
- ❌ Saving a partly finished bottle for later Follow storage and disposal instructions after a feed.
Questions dads ask
Does every bottle need warming?
No. Follow the milk’s preparation instructions: preparation temperature and serving temperature are two different things.
Can I clean bottles with a little hot water from a café?
A simple rinse isn’t enough. Plan for clean equipment and appropriate cleaning before the next use.
