💬 Building language through everyday conversation

Your baby learns from familiar voices, rhythms and back-and-forth interaction. You do not need to talk constantly: warm, responsive moments with dad and other caregivers are what matter.

What you'll need

  • Optional cloth books or sturdy board books.
  • Songs, stories and conversation in the languages your family comfortably uses.

Try this together

  1. 1. Describe everyday care

Use short, natural phrases during nappies, feeds and getting dressed: “I'm picking you up” or “Here are your blue trousers.”

  2. 2. Leave room for a reply

Pause and watch for a coo, expression or movement. Respond to it as part of the conversation, without demanding a performance.

  3. 3. Name feelings and interests

Try “You look tired” or “You're watching the cat.” Follow what catches your baby's attention rather than quizzing them.

  4. 4. Read and sing in familiar languages

Share short songs or picture books in Kiswahili, English or any other home language. Multilingual families do not need to switch to one language; consistency and enjoyment can fit your family's routines.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Thinking every quiet moment is wasted Babies also need pauses and rest. Stop or soften the interaction when they turn away or seem tired.
  • ❌ Keeping background media loud Turn down television or radio during conversation so your voice is easier to hear. Playful baby-directed speech is fine alongside everyday words.
