🗣️ Why babies say papa and mama: the story of babbling

Your baby is going ba-ba-ba and you are waiting for dad? Those syllables start as vocal exploration. Here is why similar sounds appear in many languages, without necessarily being a baby’s first words.

The short version

  • Lallation means babbling, especially repeated syllables.
  • A repeated pa-pa does not necessarily mean dad yet.
  • In Georgian, mama means father and deda means mother.
  • Similar sounds do not prove a shared origin.

Sounds, words and family habits

  1. 1. Lallation simply means babbling

It describes babbling, especially repeated syllables such as ba-ba-ba and ma-ma-ma. Babies explore their voices and coordinate lips, tongue and breath. Sounds and timing vary: this is not a deadline or proof that your baby is naming you.

  2. 2. Why do these sounds keep turning up?

Lip sounds such as b, p and m appear in babbling. Linguist Roman Jakobson proposed an explanation linking some parental words to early sounds and adults’ interpretation of them. It is not a universal rule: languages and babies do not all follow one script.

  3. 3. In Georgian, mama is dad

Georgian მამა, mama, means father; დედა, deda, means mother. A familiar-looking word can have a different meaning. Worth knowing before confidently translating the conversation around a cot.

  4. 4. French papa has a long history

French papa meaning father is recorded from the 13th century. The CNRTL dictionary describes it as a children’s word with parallels in other languages, including Latin pappa. That does not establish a porridge-to-father story or an 18th-century invention.

  5. 5. Japan and Italy: how you use the word matters

Japanese chichi is used, among other contexts, when speaking about your own father to someone outside the family; otōsan is commonly used to address him or refer to someone else’s father. Family habits vary. Italian Babbo, particularly associated with Tuscany, also appears in Babbo Natale, Father Christmas.

  6. 6. Real talk

Answer those sounds, talk to your baby and leave space for their reply. No dad-versus-mum contest needed. When a word becomes their way of calling you, its place on the first-word podium will not matter.

Questions dads ask

What is lallation?

It means babbling, especially repeated syllables such as ba-ba-ba and ma-ma-ma. They are not automatically words addressed to a person.

Do babies always say papa before mama?

No. The order varies, and repeated sounds do not necessarily name a parent. If you are concerned about speech or hearing, ask a qualified health professional.
