🌙 Periods returning and getting intimate again

Having a baby gives your relationship a proper shake-up. Tiredness, hormones, periods returning and getting used to a changed body can put libido on pause, for her and for you. To dodge the relationship clashes of those first 12 months, try a bit of empathy, say what you mean and keep the pressure around sex at zero.

What you need to know

  • The first period after birth usually arrives 6 to 8 weeks after delivery if she's not breastfeeding, or several months later if she's exclusively breastfeeding.
  • Breastfeeding isn't reliable contraception: ovulation can happen before that first period. If baby number two isn't on your wish list just yet, talk contraception before having sex again.
  • For her, falling oestrogen levels, the breastfeeding hormone prolactin, vaginal dryness and feeling 'touched out' after holding the baby all day can lower desire.
  • Sleep debt and stress affect you too. This lull is normal and has physical and psychological causes, rather than being a sign of relationship trouble.

Your team plan for fewer post-baby clashes

  1. 1. Keep affection separate from sex

Cuddles, massages, skin-to-skin time together: no expectations and no obligation for anything to follow. A cuddle should feel safe, without anyone wondering what they've signed up for.

  2. 2. Give her some headspace

Exhaustion kills spontaneity. Properly share the organising and the night shifts: a less overloaded mind leaves more room for the two of you.

  3. 3. Say what you need out loud

'I'm at the end of my tether tonight. I need 30 minutes of peace.' Saying it plainly helps stop resentment piling up on either side.

  4. 4. Start again at your own pace

There's no deadline. The postnatal check, around 6 weeks after birth, checks healing and the pelvic floor. With post-birth hormones in the mix, a water-based lubricant is often a must.

  5. 5. The dad hack

Forget the calendar. Those first few months are about building a new closeness as a family of three, rather than trying to recreate your old relationship. Take it step by step, without comparing yourselves to anyone else.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Counting the weeks 'It's been 6 weeks, so technically we can…': the check-up gives a medical green light, not an obligation to get busy.
  • ❌ Taking it personally A dip in desire after having a baby doesn't mean she's rejecting you. That's biology and tiredness talking.
