⏳ Understanding labour stages and cervical dilation

Labour progress and pain relief vary; the maternity team assesses individual needs.

The Main Stages

  • Early labour: contractions soften and open the cervix; duration varies widely.
  • Established or active labour: definitions and progress assessment vary by clinical guideline and individual circumstances.
  • Full dilation is followed by the pushing stage; your maternity team explains progress and the care plan.

Supporting labour and discussing choices

  1. 1. Support choices

Offer reassurance, breathing support and movement if comfortable and clinically safe. Slow progress is not the birthing parent’s fault.

  2. 2. Ask the team

Discuss benefits, risks and availability of pain relief. Epidurals can provide effective analgesia but are not a guaranteed way to accelerate dilation; monitoring and mobility depend on the care plan.
