1. Clean only as needed
Wash your hands. If soiled, gently clean with water and dry carefully; follow the maternity team’s instructions. Do not pull the stump or apply routine antiseptic unless advised.
2. Watch for infection
Seek prompt medical advice for spreading redness, pus, foul smell, fever or an unwell baby.
